Transportation

Elizabeth City’s favorable location makes ease-of-transportation a real asset. In fact, two international airports are a short drive away in Norfolk and Raleigh. Our own Elizabeth City Regional Airport is larger than most and can accommodate helicopters, Lear Jets, and 737s.

As far as driving is concerned, we’re just 45 minutes from bustling Hampton Roads where cultural activities and recreation abound and 1.6 million people work and play. The four-lane U.S. 17 also links us to Interstates 64, 95, and 85, allowing us to offer same-day trucking service to more than half the nation’s consumer and industrial markets.

Future I-87 Interstate

  • Reliable transportation route running from Norfolk-Virginia Beach to Raleigh-Durham. Many portions of this highway already have accelerated speed limits with only a few 2-lane sections remaining.
  • 4-lane interstate quality already exists from Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County north to the Port of Virginia.
  • Many industries have chosen to locate along this corridor in recent years. Those industries include Triangle Tyre, Corning, Syfan Manufacturing, Weitron, WAO Garage, Moneysworth, Legacy Coach, Cafferty Enterprises, and others.

Norfolk International Airport (ORF)

  • One of the Nation’s largest airports consisting of 9 airline carriers with non-stop flights to over 30 major airports.
  • Airport has 8 car rental companies including Enterprise, Budget, and Alamo.
  • Shipping services are offered to companies needing air cargo services. About 60 million pounds of cargo are shipped in and out of the airport via Fed Ex, Mountain Air, and UPS.

Elizabeth City Regional Airport

  • Joint civil-military airport co-owned by the U.S. Coast Guard, Elizabeth City, and Pasquotank County.
  • Airport is home to the operations and maintenance of Coast Guard HC-130 and MH-60T Airplanes currently being performed by DynCorp.
  • The Airport is also home to the City of Elizabeth City’s Aviation Research and Development Commerce Park. Current tenants include DynCorp and Telephonics. There are approximately 60+ acres of available land for aviation related businesses.
  • 25 privately owned aircrafts with leasable private hanger space.

Rail Access

  • Direct rail access from the Tanglewood Megasite to three of the four Port of Virginia facilities (CSX Short-line Partner)
